Handcrafted 8-Drawer Cabinet Build: Step-by-Step Woodworking Guide
Hello!
Today, I’d like to introduce the build process for an 8-drawer wooden chest crafted right here in the workshop.
This project involved a wide variety of woodworking techniques. I’ll walk you through each step of the process, and I hope this guide serves as a helpful reference for anyone interested in woodworking or DIY furniture making!
1. Precision Lumber Cutting
We started by roughly breaking down large solid wood panels with a circular saw to near-final dimensions. Next, we used the table saw to make precise cuts for the side panels, frame parts, drawer fronts, and internal components. To prepare for the back panel installation, we clamped down a guide fence and routed out the rabbet grooves using a trimmer.
2. Assembling the Frame
Next, we applied wood glue into the exposed screw holes, inserted wooden dowel plugs, and flush-cut them with a flush-cut saw. Then, we thoroughly sanded the top, sides, and plugged areas to create a smooth, seamless surface.
3. Staining the Frame & Installing Drawer Slides
Using a brush, we applied wood stain to the exterior of the main frame. After ensuring the drawer slides were perfectly level, we secured them with screws, installed the drawer boxes, and checked the clearance to make sure every drawer operated smoothly.
4. Aligning and Attaching Drawer Fronts
To maintain perfectly uniform gaps between the drawer fronts, we used thin wood shims and business cards as spacers before clamping the fronts in place. We then drove screws from the inside of the drawer box into the back of the front panel, keeping all screw heads completely hidden from the exterior.
5. Installing the Back Panel & Edge Flushing
Along the grooves previously routed out with the trimmer, we slid the plywood back panel into place and secured it firmly with a pneumatic brad nailer. Afterward, we cleaned up and softened all the outer edges using hand planes and sandpaper.
6. Finishing, Hardware Installation & Final Assembly
The Final Result
This piece was crafted with deep care and attention to detail, hoping it brings long-lasting value to its user. I hope you found this build guide helpful, and I’ll continue sharing more woodworking projects and practical shop tips in the future!
