Crafting a One-of-a-Kind Carbonized Wooden Stool from Antique Jeju Wood
Hello everyone!
Today, I’m excited to share the step-by-step process of crafting a unique carbonized wooden stool using antique wood (Gojae) sourced right here in Jeju.
By combining the naturally rustic, deep texture of aged wood with the carbonization technique (shou sugi ban), we completed a calm, elegant black stool with a rich character.
1. Marking and Drilling the Seat
After securing the top block with clamps, we drilled the mortise holes for the legs.
2. Shaping the Legs
We then mounted the top end of each leg on a wood lathe and carefully turned it with a chisel to form a round tenon that fits into the seat's mortise hole.

4. Securing with Wedges
Once fully driven, any protruding parts of the wedges and tenons were sawed off flush with the surface.
5. Levelling and Angle Trimming
Using a saw, we trimmed the leg bottoms along the marked line so the stool sits perfectly flat without any wobbling.
6. The Carbonization Process
Next, using a gas torch, we evenly charred the entire surface of the legs and seat.
Charring the wood not only enhances its durability and moisture resistance, but also gives it that deep, weighty texture and rich tone unique to carbonized timber.
After charring, all residual soot and dust were thoroughly cleaned off with a brush.
7. Oil Finish and Final Touch
We applied a rich coat of finishing oil over the carbonized surface.
Then, using clean towels and an air gun, we wiped away any excess oil to complete the smooth finish.
Completion
What makes it even more special is that it was made entirely without metal hardware—relying solely on traditional wedged joinery and the carbonization technique.
