Crafting a Premium Walnut & Zelkova Wooden Desk Nameplate
Today, I’d like to share the making process of a special, high-end wooden accessory: a custom handcrafted wooden desk nameplate made with Walnut and Zelkova.
By pairing the heavy, deep tones of walnut with the soft, warm shades of zelkova, I created a truly one-of-a-kind piece.
1. Beveling the Base & Cutting the Inlay Groove
The key to a great desk nameplate is finding the perfect angle—one that sits stably on a desk while keeping the text clearly visible. I carefully adjusted the table saw angle to clean up the bevel that forms the base.
Next, I cut a precise groove along the front so the lighter zelkova wood could be seamlessly fitted in.
2. Cutting Zelkova & Lamination Process
I cut the lighter zelkova wood to fit precisely into the groove of the walnut base. The stark contrast between the dark walnut and bright zelkova makes the engraved text stand out significantly more.
Once cut, I applied wood glue thoroughly and spread it evenly with a brush.
3. Precision CNC Engraving
Next comes the most crucial step: engraving. After finalizing the blueprint with the exact font and positioning, I used a CNC router to precisely carve out the design.
4. Oil Finishing (TABLE TOP OIL)
Finally, it was time for the finishing touch to bring out the natural beauty of the wood and enhance its durability. For this build, I used high-quality TABLE TOP OIL (POLIKA No.22).
Using a soft cloth, I applied the oil evenly across the surface. The moment the oil touched the wood, walnut’s signature deep chocolate tone and zelkova’s elegant grain instantly came to life. After thoroughly rubbing it into every corner and letting it dry, the nameplate was complete with a subtle, luxurious semi-gloss sheen.
The Final Result
The weighty, refined look of the dark walnut pairs wonderfully with an image of prestige and trust. Just placing it on a desk instantly elevates the sophistication of the space.
