Crafting a Custom Wooden Sign with Antique Wooden Planks from Jeju: 'Gemütlichkeit'

 Hello everyone!

Today, I’d like to share the story behind crafting a custom wooden sign using antique wooden planks from Jeju (Jeju Gojae), beautifully weathered by time.

The word carved into the sign is ‘Gemütlichkeit’, a German word meaning ‘coziness’ and ‘comfort.’

Let me take you through the process of how this piece was made to add warmth and character to the space.

1. Preparing the Surface

The first step was refining the surface of the Jeju antique wood, which has endured the test of time.

To preserve its uniquely rugged, natural texture while removing long-accumulated dust and debris, we thoroughly cleaned and smoothed the surface using a brush sander.

2. Precision Engraving with CNC

Next came the engraving phase.

Once the surface was cleaned, the wood was securely clamped to the workbench.

Watching the CNC bit trace across the wood and cleanly carve out each letter is always amazing—it’s a perfect moment where vintage charm meets modern precision.

3. Painting the Lettering

After the CNC carving was complete, we filled the engraved lines with black paint.

Using a fine brush, we carefully painted inside every stroke to ensure no detail was missed.

As the paint was applied, the sharp black letters stood out strikingly against the rich wood grain, bringing the sign to life.

The harmony between the deep tone of the aged wood and the bold black accent creates a truly sophisticated feel.

4. Installation at Jeju Beer Fountain (Jeju Yaksu-teo)

The finished sign was installed beautifully inside the store.

Complemented by warm, soft lighting and the cozy ambiance of the venue, it radiates an even deeper aesthetic charm.

We hope everyone who visits Jeju Beer Fountain (Jeju Yaksu-teo) feels the warmth, comfort, and Gemütlichkeit that this sign represents.
